Bringing Holiday Cheer to Less Fortunate Families

image001Celebrating the end of the year Holidays that start with Thanksgiving and end with New Year’s parties is one of the most exciting seasons for children and adults alike. Most people look forward to these events.

But not everyone.

Individuals who can barely make ends meet, like those who are applying or are receiving public assistance, can’t afford to host a Thanksgiving dinner party, you know, a turkey with all the trimmings, for family and friends. There are other priorities like finding food, a home and warm clothing.

For this reason, every year, our B2W programs in Queens and Brooklyn host a Thanksgiving breakfast for program participants. But that’s not all! Staff raffles Butterball Turkeys and $15 turkey vouchers to purchase the necessary thanksgiving food items.

This year, the B2W program in Brooklyn received twenty-five turkey donations and the Queens location received forty turkey vouchers. Goodwill NYNJ is grateful to our partners for continuing to support this effort to bring some Holiday joy to our program participants. We thank BJs, TD Bank, JP Morgan CHASE bank and other individual donors.

20151208_133220Last month, the Brooklyn B2W program, in partnership with TD Bank, began offering financial literacy workshops for Spanish-speaking ESL program participants. Bank staff also was at hand to help open bank accounts to encourage savings.

Our B2W programs are one-stop employment centers that provide job readiness training, placement services, and vocational training to New Yorkers applying for or receiving public assistance. Employment services are shaped according to the background, interests, and skills of each individual. Public assistance recipients (including qualified Food Stamp recipients) may also be eligible for training vouchers to help obtain new jobs or further their careers as they work toward self- sufficiency. Referral by the New York City Human Resources Administration is required.

If your company would like to donate turkeys, food vouchers, toys, gift cards, gifts or coats that our B2W staff may distribute among its program participants, please contact Resource Coordinator Luis Aucapina at
