Goodwill salutes U.S. veterans

Our Operation: GoodJobs program serves job-ready U.S. veterans and their family members. To participate, they must have at least one day of Active Duty service, and have anything but a Dishonorable discharge. We have helped veterans like Ashley Suhre, a native Hawaiian, who needed to find career direction and increase her income.

When Ashley came to Goodwill’s Operation: GoodJobs in September 2014, she was working as a Sales Associate at Harley Davidson in Manhattan.  After the holiday season, her hours were drastically reduced. She needed a steadier source of income.

Ashley is an Air Force veteran who served as a Medical Lab Technician from 2003 to 2007. After participating in two of our employment workshops last fall, we arranged for an informational interview with a human resources manager from Marriott Hotels.

Even when last February Ashley secured employment at The Jade, an upscale boutique hotel in Greenwich Village, done there yet!  Always moving onward and upward, she continued to keep an open mind. She never turns down an opportunity to interview and explore other career options. OGJ set Ashley u for additional interviews with Allied Barton for an executive assistant position, Facebook for a receptionist role, as well as The Edition, a brand new luxury hotel in Madison Square Park as a Guest Services Representative.

Ashley didn’t give up hope, even on the face of rejection. In July, a position opened up at the Ritz Carlton as a Front Desk Receptionist which she applied for immediately.  After 3 sets of intense interviews, she was hired and brought on board at double the salary she was making at the Jade.

“Everyone at Operation: GoodJobs is amazing and they’ve been a huge support throughout my job search process,” says Ashley Suhre.  “Through OGJ I really feel like I’ve made lasting relationships that will extend far beyond when my job search is over!”

To date, Goodwill NYNJ’s OGJ has helped 168 veterans and family members transition to new careers, start jobs and helped over 300 veterans to access much needed benefits and services.

Starting this December, OGJ will operate from a new program site located next to our Goodwill Store in Harlem. The site is located at 2196 5th Ave, New York, NY 10037.
