This winter, five teams from different Goodwill Youth Services programs competed against each other in the Winter Recess Basketball Tournament. Teams from Queens and Brooklyn programs: Beacon 109, Beacon 141, SONYC 157, Beacon 265, and Cornerstone Farragut, played during the week of February 16-20, from 1-4 p.m.
Unfortunately, due to the snowy winter, the final games had to be postponed and played during the Spring Break coming around full circle. The semifinal games took place on Monday, April 6, from 12-3 p.m. The championship game was played on Monday, April 13th at 6 p.m. The winner team, Cornerstone program at Farragut Houses community center in Brooklyn, received a $75 gift card. SONYC 157 program in Queens came in Second place.
Each student that participated in the tournament was required to submit a one-page essay. The theme was “Black History Month.” Julio Cueva, a student from Goodwill’s Beacon program at PS 141 in Astoria, Queens, won first place. Devonte Serrano and Latrell Brown won second and third place respectively.
