This month we are proud to celebrate the achievements of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Since the 1970s here in the United States, we have recognized April as a special opportunity to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community.
Today, autism affects more than 1.5 million Americans and one out of 68 children nation-wide, according to the Autism Society, the nation’s leading grassroots autism organization.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that causes social, communication and behavioral difficulties that can often be diagnosed by age 2. ASD is diagnosed by observing a child’s behavior and development. Early diagnosis and intervention could make a difference in helping him or her. Learn about the signs and common symptoms of ASD and the developmental milestones to look for to determine a child’s progress as they age. Meeting these milestones might include: pointing at things, using simple gestures like clapping and waving “bye-bye,” or talking, for example.
Here at Goodwill NY-NJ, Bridges to Success and Project Possibilities serve individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders who live in the five boroughs of New York City and who want to work or to participate in community inclusion activities that will connect them with other members of the community.
Bridges to Success serves individuals with intellectual disabilities who also have Autism Spectrum Disorders in Long Island City, Queens.
Possibilities offers activities that individuals with intellectual disabilities who also have Autism Spectrum Disorders enjoy. Activities include trips to book stores, libraries, parks and other areas in their neighborhoods. Program locations include Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Jamaica, Queens.
