Spring arrives this Friday! As we approach this season, children and youth in our programs are ready to go outdoors and participate in sports and dance, and be creative! Here’s a taste of what’s cooking in Goodwill’s Youth Services.
Goodwill’s Step Team to Perform in DYCD “STEP it Up” Performance
Beacon’s Finest is a step team of middle and high school girls ages 10-16. The Goodwill team is currently one of the top ten teams and will perform during the final competition at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in June.
Any girl participating in a New York City Beacon program may join the step program. Participants practice at IS 109 on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Goodwill Launches Rugby Program
In the death of winter early January, seven very athletic and brave 11th graders from Goodwill’s program at Queens Vocational & Technical -Community School had their first session. Then Gotham Knights volunteers began recruiting players at Goodwill’s Beacon 141 program.
“All students were fully engaged, followed our directions perfectly, and picked the game up incredibly fast,” comments Rob Mesika, Gotham Knights member of the board, who in winter 2014 started the club’s Gotham Gives Back initiative, which seeks to strengthen and improve the New York City community by promoting volunteerism and community service. “I’ve strived to make the Goodwill rugby program our main initiative under the Gotham Gives Back umbrella.” He coordinates the volunteers, who are current and former Gotham Knights players; raise funds to support the program, serves as liaison between the Gotham Knights board, Play Rugby USA, and Goodwill NY-NJ
Play Rugby USA has provided free services including coaching support. Full-time and paid coaches work exclusively with urban youth. It has offered training and consulting for the volunteers on best practices. The organization has also offered $300 per student scholarships to three young girls from Beacon 141 to join its Manhattan Rugby Club. They’ll play in flag tournaments with a full-fledged team. A Gotham Knights volunteer will take them from Astoria to Pier 40 (Chelsea Piers) to practice and a Play Rugby USA coach will bring them back home.
Play Rugby USA was started in 2003 to deliver sports education to urban youth through rugby. See more info at: www.playrugbyusa.com
