Since April 2013, Goodwill’s Jobs-Plus program has helped find work for residents of the Clason Point, Sack Wern and Monroe New York City Housing Authority developments. In addition, the Goodwill program has hosted events throughout the year to offer the general community tax preparation, backpacks during the Back-to-School season, food for families on Thanksgiving, gifts for the holidays, and much more.

Jobs-Plus offers work-readiness: Help with job applications, interview preparation and professional appearance. It also provides referrals for training and certification in fields such as construction, food service and security. Once members find work, they receive financial counseling to ensure they make the best choices: saving money and learning how to budget expenses.

When members go back to the Jobs-Plus program to inform that they secure employment, staff rings a bell to celebrate their accomplishment.

Staff Bell RingingOne of those job-seekers securing employment with help from Jobs-Plus is Hakeem McFarlane, a well-spoken man in his twenties who lives in the James Monroe Houses. He had no High School Diploma or GED and very little work experience. Staff noted him because he was a very quiet young man who often went to the program riding his skateboard.

Hakeem joined the Making a Man program at Jobs-Plus. There he received mentoring, coaching, assistance gaining employment and a suit to wear on job interviews. When asked the suit and dress shoe size he worn, he was at a loss. He didn’t own a suit and had not worn a pair of dress shoes since he was a young boy. Hakeem received his new suit and pair of dress shoes from 100 Suits for 100 Men. Check out pictures from the Making a Man program here.

He wore his suit to many interviews and in less than two months after joining the Goodwill program, Hakeem was hired as team member at restaurant Pret A Manger. After his 3-month review, he was promoted to Junior Manager.

Job-seekers and the community may learn of new job openings and other events and stay connected with Jobs-Plus through their Facebook page.
