Beacon 141 Student Wins 1st Place in Chess Tournament
Last December, Danylo Mirin, an 8th-grader at IS141, won first place in the “Queens Chess Days” tournament held in PS 150 in Queens. The tournament, organized by “Chess in the Schools,” runs biweekly. Teams from all over the city compete.
Danylo received a medal and is currently attending Goodwill’s Beacon 141’s chess program.
In addition, six students won 2nd place team trophy in the tournament.
“We look forward for Danylo to be part of the Beacon 141 chess team “Steinway Knights” and represent Goodwill in the Mayor’s Cup this spring,” says Farhan Kapadia, Goodwill Beacon 141 Program Director.

Compass Program at PS 40 Holds Dads and Sons Event
Staff spoke to six dads and two older brothers who came up to the first meeting about the importance of adult males to get involved with younger kids and to serve as role models. The Goodwill team of dads, brothers and program participants, unfortunately lost against their competitor team, but team work helped male bonding.
Compass Program Director Van White comments that he is currently in talks with PS 40 Principal Branker to create a “Man Cave.” If you would like to know how a “Man Cave” works, stay tuned to this blog. Soon we’ll have more to tell!
