We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, people around the world are coming together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
This Giving Tuesday at Goodwill, we are putting a spotlight on Youth Career Readiness.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 12.7% of out-of-school youth aged 16-24 are unemployed. That is more than twice the national average of 5.8%.
Each year, Goodwill works with more than 2,000 young adults who face many challenges to employment but who are career ready. Your support will help us reach even more youth as they begin their career paths and become contributing members of society.
Give today, and share the impact of your gift!
Maria was in 5th grade when she registered for Goodwill’s Beacon program at IS 141 in Long Island City, NY. Throughout her years with the program, she took part in the Counselor-In-Training, the Summer Youth Employment, and College exploration programs; youth council; and volunteering. With Goodwill, Maria developed valuable leadership and public speaking skills, and gained hands-on experience working in the childcare field.
Today, Maria works as a group leader at the Beacon while attending college. As a Goodwill employee, Maria is the go-to person in our youth services programs, helping to transition new staff, leading the middle school youth council, organizing service-learning projects, and creating exciting new activities for participants.
