As we prepare to honor all U.S. veterans on Veterans Day weekend in November, we’d like to invite you to consider donating professional or work outfits to Goodwill. Each year, our forty-four NY-NJ Goodwill stores hold Goodwill Suits Vets to offer free work and professional outfits to all U.S. veterans who go to our Goodwill NY-NJ stores and present their military id. It’s that simple!
This year, Goodwill Suits Vets will take place in January to help the most Vets during the New Year interviewing season. Three years ago, we began this program to welcome the military men and women who were coming back home to re-start their civil lives. To help them in this transition to civil life, we decided to provide free suits. We saw first hand how much need our Vets experienced as they returned home.
That was a first step: provide free outfits for work and interviews.
Last January, we launched Operation: GoodJobs to provide a holistic integration of career services with family and financial strengthening services for United States veterans and family Members, including post-9/11 U.S. veterans, female veterans, 18-26 year-old veterans, National Guard and Reservists.
OGJ offers career assessment, individualized career planning, job training and accreditation, financial education, job placement and career advancement services, transitional services, family support services, assistance with early education and child care, support for spouse and other family members.
Meet one of the 150 U.S veterans we’ve enrolled in Operation: GoodJobs. Gabriel Valdes works as a security guard at AlliedBarton.
“I served on active duty for 8 years. Five years as a radio repairman in the US Marine Corps and three years as an infantryman with the US Army. I was deployed twice to Iraq, one with the Marines in 2003 at T.Q, about 75 west of Baghdad, and with the Army in Mosul in 2009. I finished my second contract in March 2011.”
