With this week’s post, we close up the many activities Goodwill’s summer campers experienced this year. More than 120 kids from Goodwill’s Beacon program in PS 109 in Queens traveled throughout the city in each trip.

The staff from Goodwill’s Beacon 109 program took kids on many trips each Wednesday during the seven weeks of summer camp to explore the vastness of New York City. These trips were designed to help participants enhance their social and cultural awareness within the metropolitan New York area. Campers visited the Bronx Zoo, Museum of Natural History, Queens Hall of Science, and Jib Lanes.

Through a partnership with the Queens village Library, the Beacon program also offered campers reading, literacy and data base research. The library staff extended literary and database research classes for elementary and middle school students on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Library educators Tim, Julia and Emily taught kids how to obtain library cards how to locate books in the library, and how to research family ancestry using the library database system. Campers participated in a summer reading program that allowed them to receive rewards when their target reading goal was met. Many of the participants found a passion for reading and shared the knowledge that they gained from their readings. In addition, the librarians also asked participants to turn in book reports in order to keep up with their reading logs.
