Well, students and staff at Goodwill’s Out of School Time program at I.S. 145 Joseph Pulitzer Middle School in Jackson Heights, Queens, have a full schedule of events this spring.

First, the upcoming events this weekend:

This coming Sunday, May 11, Goodwill’s OST 145 and the Carnaval de Huejotzingo NY Cultural group will hold a dual celebration: Mother’s Day and The 5 de Mayo, to introduce the Mexican holiday to residents of Jackson Heights from different countries and cultures.

The opening ceremonies will begin at noon. Live music band will play until 12:45 p.m. Then at 1 p.m., the groups will line up to hold a parade, which will start on the corner of 79th St and Northern Blvd. The parade will go around the school before ending in its yard. Next, we’ll reenact the Battle of Puebla, when the Mexican army defeated the French on May 5, 1862.

During a 3 p.m. break, Goodwill staff will hold a raffle for all participating moms. The show will end by 5 p.m.

Amazing Day of Volunteerism
On Friday, April 25, students and teachers from I.S. 145 hosted the stars of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” for The Amazing Day, an event to serve the community through volunteerism. In this day of service, volunteers from different organization came together to paint murals, do some gardening, and to collect more than 2,000 cans for the Food Bank.

Actors Jamie Fox, Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Dane DeHaan met with students during “The Amazing Day.”
