Sonya Darrow is a thrift artist in residence at Goodwill NY-NJ. Hailing from Cedar Rapids, Sonya has been working in collaboration with a number of Goodwill’s around the United States and now has set up shop with us. Sonya works with participants from Project Possibilities and Bridges to Success, two programs specially geared to help improve the lives of individuals with autism who reside in New York City. The goal is to encourage self-expression through art projects. Some of the finished artwork can be seen at Goodwill’s Bronx store located at 361 East 149 Street.

Working with these individuals has been an incredible experience to witness. I learn from them as much as they learn from me. We work together on developing each individual as an artist; pushing the boundaries of expression and building confidence with it. All of these individuals grow with each art class. I build the curriculum around each one, so that they all get to develop in their own way. I get the opportunity to see an individual be impacted by art making – to see the spark ignite and the ideas begin to click. Thanks to the staff and individuals of these programs for letting me step into their creative world. There’s more to come from these artists! – Sonya Darrow
