Fifteen dynamic middle school students form the current cheerleader squad of Goodwill’s Out of School Time program at I.S. 145 in Jackson Heights, Queens. The group of talented girls perform at basketball games, school assemblies and other school and community events.
Last fall, neighborhood residents invited the OST team to participate in the Jackson Heights Halloween parade.
Activity Specialist and Cheer Coach Jacqueline Martin formed The OST 145 cheerleading team in 2012. She notes, “Cheerleading is a sport, with vigorous usage of gymnastics, choreographed dance, vocal projection, and stunting.”
Practice is held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. at the I.S.145 school auditorium. Students who wish to join must be enrolled in I.S. 145 and in good academic standing with at least 75% grade point average.
Members must attend at least one practice a week and practice on both days during the month leading to a performance.
Always have high energy and a positive attitude. Bring your A game!
