As we continue to celebrate the achievements of individuals who participate in our programs during March, Developmental Disabilities Awareness month, we’d like to introduce Daheem Henderson.
When Daheem came to Goodwill’s Prevocational Services in October 2009, he thought of himself as being unemployable. He had been diagnosed with developmental and psychiatric disabilities.
Daheem behaved inappropriately in the community. He would often get into verbal altercations with strangers and would feel the need to correct them. Using community exploration to correct this behavior, staff demonstrated how Daheem could travel in his community without getting into quarrels. He was also encouraged to foster relationships with his peers to develop appropriate social skills. Daheem also struggled with attention seeking behavior. He would often vandalize property.
Staff developed various internship sites to prepare him for employment. Progressively, he attended program volunteer sites and then was placed in an individualized site developed just for him. His behavior improved in these volunteer sites: he developed good work ethic and customer service skills.
Today, Daheem works at his dream job, Dr. Jays, as a Greeter/Sales Associate. His responsibilities include greeting guests as they enter the store, helping guests locate merchandise, performing light maintenance and providing general customer service.
