Last Sunday, Goodwill staff and program participants volunteered to pick cast-off clothing from the athletes who ran in this year’s ING New York City’s Marathon.
The volunteers had a super early (and cold) wake up call: buses picked them up in strategic locations throughout the city at 4:30 a.m. So, many woke up at 3:30 a.m. or earlier in the coldest day of this fall – such troopers!
But they did it gladly. After the final tally, our retail division reports that volunteers gathered more than 30,000 pieces of clothing in the starting line.
How will this benefit Goodwill you ask? We’ll sell the clothing at our Goodwill stores. So, don’t waste time, you may still be able to pick an athlete’s running track – perhaps the winners or a celebrity?
All sales proceeds from our stores fund Goodwill programs and services. For instance, Jennifer, one of our Pre-Vocational program participants in Astoria, just started working as an intern in the local Astor Bake Shop here in Astoria. Only a few months ago, Jennifer began receiving training and volunteering at the 4th Street Café, located inside the Goodwill Queens headquarters.
