Goodwill NY-NJ teamed-up with the New York City Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities to kick-off October, National Disability Employment Awareness month. On October 1, we hosted a fashion show, Goodwill Suits You, at our East Harlem store featuring job-seekers with disabilities as models. Prior to the show, six fashion bloggers selected the outfits for the models from merchandise found at our stores.
More than 100 guests attended the annual event, including Goodwill program participants, as well as students and job-seekers who will participate on Disability Mentoring Day on October 16. Models got to keep the outfits after the show to wear on job interviews and work.
Finding the right outfit to wear on your first day at work can be a daunting task. If you’ve never had a job before, or have a disability, it can be especially difficult.
According to the United States Department of Labor, only 20.5% of individuals with disabilities participate in the labor force in August 2013.
