Athena Monk, an African-American woman in her late fifties, has lived across the street from Goodwill’s Astoria headquarters all her life. Unable to find a job for many years, she finally joined Goodwill’s Visually Impaired Program in early 2008.  The program offers training and employment support services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

After a series of job assessments, Athena chose to work in retail.  She was hired to work as a production worker at the East Harlem store in September 2008, where she hangs and racks clothes for sale.

Goodwill of Greater NY and Northern NJ’s Visually Impaired Program helps those individuals who are blind or visually impaired find either competitive or supported employment.   Located in our Astoria Headquarters in Queens, our focus is placing clients in jobs in their communities that are a good match with their skills. The program also offers pre-employment counseling, work readiness skills training, intensive on-site job coaching, and extended services.

The program is open to individuals in all five boroughs as long as they are referred by the New York State Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped.  Located in our Astoria Headquarters in Queens, NY at 4-21 27th Avenue,  please call us at (718) 777-6357 for more information.
