Just how did this honor come about? Our GoodwillNyNj program recently collaborated with St. Johns University. Out of that collaboration, we’ve been assigned a Graduate Teaching student, Carla Pericon. A wonderful addition to our team, Carla’s been working with the children of our Adult Education parents.

Our Graduate Teaching student took the initiative to have her group of Beacon 149 children to participate in a citywide contest sponsored by Impacto Latino News. She worked with the children on expressing how their community impacts their culture, and how their culture impacts their community.

At the end of three sessions the children submitted drawings of their ideas to the judges. Six of Beacon 149’s kids submitted drawings – and two placed in the top three of all NYC entrants!

All the children that participated will be awarded a certificate and four tickets to Scooby-do Live at the Beacon Theater. Those children that placed will also receive a special prize. We are so proud of all our students, and delighted to see winners – in the spotlight.

Congratulations to all and thank you to Carla and all our shoppers, donators and supporters. Your support keeps our programs going strong!
