This Veterans Day, Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey is saying thank you to the many men and women, and their families, who have made tremendous sacrifices to keep us safe from harm.

Goodwill Suits Vets will run in all 40 area stores from Saturday to Monday, Nov. 10-12, making professional clothing available to any veteran, past or present, preparing to enter the workforce.

Jamar Claiborne shops for a work outfit courtesy of the Livingston Goodwill Store in Downtown Brooklyn during the first Goodwill Suits Vets in January 2012.

Vets wishing to participate in this event may simply go to any Goodwill store, present proof of service, and then select the items needed for an interview or first day of work. There is absolutely no cost for vets. It’s that simple.

In hopes of spreading the message about Goodwill Suits Vets, Goodwill created a series of video interviews with veterans based in the Tri-state area. Adam C. Passarella, a veteran and now VP of the business development fashion site, has been working in the fashion industry for the past 8 years after serving his country.

“Being a veteran myself,” explains Adam, “I am no stranger to transitioning out of the military. Not being aware of or having such services at hand was a tough thing. Especially since vets are in need of employment services that call for suiting and other goods that help them properly present themselves and, in turn, secure jobs.”

Goodwill is asking the public to join us by donating professional clothing for men and women. Suggested items include: suit jackets, dress pants and skirts, shirts and blouses, shoes, ties, scarves, accessories, khakis and casual shirts, jeans, work pants, sweaters, sneakers, and uniforms.

“Thank you for the opportunity you’re providing us with in our search for employment. We appreciate it in these hard times.” – Antoine Bushel, Army 1978 – 1981

The public can drop donations at any Goodwill store (all but the Patchogue Goodwill are open) or DonationXpress (our attended donation center). Tax receipts are available upon request. If your company chooses to donate, we can also arrange a special pick-up. In addition to supporting the troops, Goodwill provides affordable clothing for the public, operates job-generating programs for unemployed individuals, and works with economically-challenged populations including youth and people with emotional, mental and physical disabilities.

Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc. empowers individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment to gain independence through the power of work. We place 4 people in jobs each hour of every business day.

Happy Veterans Day, America & best of luck to all the job seekers out there. We’re rooting for you!
