As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Disability Mentoring Day (DMD) is Wednesday, October 17th. How will you honor these role models in your life?

October 17th is Disability Mentoring Day (DMD), day long one-on-one job shadowing event where students and jobseekers with disabilities are matched with workplace mentors based on career interests.

Founded back in 1999, DMD is now an international effort to promote career development for students and job seekers with disabilities through hands-on career exploration, on-site job shadowing and ongoing mentoring.  According to the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, in 2011 alone, DMD connected nearly 16,500 students and job seekers with disabilities with thousands of employers in more than 250 locations across all 50 states.

Here at Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc., we are proud of the populations we serve and inspired by their success and progress. To celebrate our team, we’ll be coordinating mentoring events for students and other job seekers with disabilities in a number of for-profit corporations. The mentees will shadow professionals in their field of interest and learn more about the opportunities open to them through dedication, hard work and a little goodwill.

We look forward to sharing our event updates with you – and please feel free to share your own stories of disabilities, employment, inspiration and success with us in the comments below, on our Facebook page or on Twitter. Hope to hear from you!
