Our video features Jim Barnette, Goodwill’s 2012 Achiever of the Year. Jim Barnette has multiple disabilities, including being legally blind and having mild quadriplegia as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage in infancy. He is happy and successful as a result of his long-standing tenure as an employee for Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette (Portland, OR).

Voting is open until Sunday, May 26, at midnight. Runners-up will receive smaller grants for their participation ($5,000 for second place, $2,000 for third place and $1,000 for fourth place). Of course, our ultimate goal is to receive the $10,000 grant! With your help, we feel we’ve got a great chance.

On Tuesday, May 14, more than 20 non-profit organizations including Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey, Inc. hosted a Post Sandy Job Fair to help people find work after the destruction-packed hurricane.

The Post Sandy Job Fair, held today at Resorts World in Jamaica, was an outstanding success.  Thousands of job-seekers from all walks of life, and hundreds of employers – many of all affected by Sandy, came out to connect and create jobs.

Additionally, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg issued a mayoral proclamation declaring today, May 14th 2013, “Post Sandy Job Fair Day” in recognition of Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ’s spearheading of the collaborative effort to bring the job fair, and new jobs, to life.  The proclamation was presented to Goodwill NYNJ President and CEO William Forrester by New York State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, whose team and efforts was also instrumental in the job fair’s success.

If you’re interested in entering the field of social work, human services, or community leadership, this is a great opportunity to make connections and gain experience that will shape your future. Our program is based at 92-31 Union Hall Street (4th Floor) in Jamaica, Queens, NY. We’re hiring interns for a variety of hours and schedules. GoodwillNyNj and Queensborough Community College have teamed up to help New Yorkers succeed.

GoodwillNyNj’s Medical Office Assistant (MOA) Occupation Training Program in conjunction with CUNY Queensborough Community College (QCC) aims to provide unemployed and displaced workers with a low-cost education in the medical industry, immediate job opportunities upon completion, and retention services throughout the process.

The GoodwillNyNj-QCC Medical Office Assistant Program provides a course of study based on career mapping, academic skills, and the attainment of national credentials. We’re invested not just in your short-term education, but you’re long-term future and we fully support students with wrap-around services during and after employment

Minimum Requirements for the program are as follows:

• 18 years of age (preference given to age 24+)
• —Displaced or Unemployed (if on unemployment, please let us know ahead of time)
• —Is a New York State Resident
• Is authorized to work in the U.S.
• Has a High School Diploma or GED
• Not currently enrolled or matriculated in a CUNY program

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements: HS diploma / GED required; at least 1 year experience in area of relevant specialty required; BA preferred; work experience in the field of mental health, vocational rehabilitation, or education / teaching preferred; excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills needed; ability to work independently and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
